Hubert
De Morogues

Château de Roux
Bragassargues

Château de Roux in Bragassargues was built in 1670 by Jacques d’Aldebert, Seigneur of Roux and Bragassargues. Domaine de Roux “tells the story of a family,” says current owner Hubert de Morogues. “It has been handed down from generation to generation since its creation, over 4 centuries ago.” Every wine made here is a tribute to the Domaine’s history.

Today the Domaine boasts around 15 hectares of organically farmed vineyards. “There’s no denying it’s a lot more work, but our aim is to provide a healthy environment not just for our vines, but for our children too.”

Seigneur de Malletot is a red wine named in tribute to the Seigneur of Malletot, one of Hubert de Morogues’ forebears, who fought alongside William the Conqueror in the Norman Conquest.

Sourced from old Grenache and Syrah vines, this luscious, jammy wine shows notes of spice on the finish. Time spent in oak barrels adds to its ageing potential. “Try it alongside venison served with red fruit, and picture yourself 1,000 years ago, post-hunt!” laughs Hubert.

Bérénice, another red, is produced only in the very best years: four have been made since 2013.

It owes its name to Jean Racine’s play written in 1670 – the year the Château was built.  Racine famously considered Uzès wines to be the best in the Kingdom of France.  Every label features one of the play’s most notable couplets. “For the 2020 vintage, we chose the lines: “The day will dawn and the day will cease / Without Titus ever seeing Bérénice,” says Hubert.

Bérénice is made chiefly from Grenache. Grapes are picked by hand into crates, and the wine is aged for 18 months in oak barrels. It’s a full-bodied, velvety wine with silky tannins and excellent complexity, showing earthy, forest-floor and truffle aromas and a hint of saffron. It pairs beautifully with hare a la royale, especially if the meat has been marinated in the same wine.
