The Mas des Volques estate dates back to the 1930s, when current owner Nicolas Souchon’s great-grandfather bought this vineyard property located in the village of Aigremont. The area is steeped in history, and the name refers to a Gallic tribe, the Volcae Arecomici, traces of whose dwellings were discovered in the nearby vineyards.  

Nicolas was a cellarmaster in Châteauneuf du Pape. However, in 2010, with his parents’ help – and with some advice from leading Rhône Valley oenologist Philippe Cambie – he joined the family estate alongside his Châteauneuf du Pape role. His wines soon acquired an excellent reputation, taking a well-deserved place on the finest dining tables in France and beyond. Then in 2015, he took the plunge and came to Le Mas des Volques full-time, taking the opportunity to source grapes from across the entire vineyard, thereby broadening the range of wines on offer.

Duché d’Uzès AOP favourites

Alba Dolia white refers to a type of earthenware container used by the Romans to make and store oil and wine.

Viognier and Roussanne give the blend scents of white flowers, acacia and apricot, while Grenache Blanc and Clairette add volume, freshness and finesse. Alba Dolia is rounded and full of delicious flavour, with a long, persistent finish. It stands up well to dishes served in sauce, and is also excellent with fish and seafood.

 

Volcae red was the first wine Nicolas made for Mas des Volques when he joined the estate in 2010, and is sourced from 50-year-old vines. The blend comprises Syrah and Carignan, barrel-aged for 12 months, and Grenache, aged in tanks to preserve freshness of flavour.

Judicious use of oak brings out expressive black fruit aromas with notes of Garrigue and a touch of spice. Powerful on the attack with plenty of finesse, followed by beautifully molten, silky tannins and a persistent finish. Volcae pairs well with hare à la royale, or with a premium cut of red meat.
